The CRAFT QUALIFICATIONS CENTRE LEVEL 4
​Diploma in Professional Crafting

This learning programme leads to the Craft Qualifications Centre Level 4 Diploma in Professional Crafting.  This programme is aimed at any professional crafter, regardless of their crafting discipline e.g. paper craft, knitting, sewing, cake decorating, jewellery making, leather/wood crafts, soap/candle crafts etc.

​You are required to submit evidence either by post, or via email, to prove you meet all of the unit requirements.  Some paperwork is required to be completed.


Mandatory

Unit 01 ~ Demonstrate advanced crafting skills and knowledge

Optional (any one unit)
Unit 02 ~ Test and Develop Ideas for Professional Craft Design Teams
Unit 03 ~ Deliver Crafting Demonstrations
Unit 04 ~ Design Craft Products
Unit 05 ~ Sell Craft Products or Designs

Entry Criteria

Ability to achieve the mandatory unit plus one of the optional units i.e. candidates must already:
~ Be in a design team (designs are sold by 3 different outlets/sources),
OR
~ Deliver demonstrations (at least 2),
OR
~ Design their own products (at least 2),
OR

~ Sell crafts products (their own or others for at least 2 years).

Unit 01   Demonstrate advanced crafting skills and knowledge

Learning Outcomes:
The learner will:
1   Be able to demonstrate advanced crafting skills and knowledge

The learner can:
1.1  Identify and recreate current crafting trends
1.2 Create new and unique ideas in crafting
1.3 Inspire others in crafting
1.4 Use advanced knowledge to help other crafters

Range:
Identify:  list.
Recreate: make your own version of something similar you have seen.
Crafting:   can be any form of craft e.g. papercraft, jewellery making, cake decorating, sewing, knitting, leather work, candle making, etc.
Trends:  current crafting that is most popular, or new, normally identified from magazines, forums, tv shows, craft events, or via the internet.
Create:  describe and make.
Unique Ideas: different way to use existing products or processes, or brand new products or processes.
Inspire:  others are enticed to copy you, praise you, or buy things from you.
Advanced Knowledge:  information gained from actual experience rather than just instruction.
Help:  give guidance, solve problems, provide a range of suggestions.
Crafters:  others participating in the same form of crafting.

All evidence must relate to the same area of crafting for this unit.


Unit 02   Test and Develop Ideas for Professional Craft Design Teams


Learning Outcomes:
The learner will:
2   Be able to test and develop ideas for professional craft design teams

The learner can:
1.1 Meet professional craft design team targets
1.2 Test and Develop a wide range of samples
1.3 Ensure samples meet quality requirements
1.4 Promote the designer on websites and forums

Range:
Professional:  a widely recognised design team, whereby the designs are advertised and sold via third parties
Craft:   can be any form of craft e.g. papercraft, jewellery making, cake decorating, sewing, knitting, leather work, candle making, etc.
Targets:  on time, sufficient volume, any specifics requested.
Test:  ensure the products for sale do what they are meant to do, or provide detailed feedback on changes required.
Develop:  describe and make.
Wide Range: sufficiently different end products.
Samples:  products make for the designer to help them promote their product for sale.
Quality Requirements: appears perfect on close up and camera inspection, meets the needs of the designer.
Promote:  talk about new products, sales, your own creations, positively.

 All evidence must relate to the same area of crafting for this unit and for Unit 1.
 

Unit 03   Deliver Crafting Demonstrations

Learning Outcomes:
The learner will:
3   Know how to deliver crafting demonstrations

The learner can:
1.1 Prepare resources for craft demonstration
1.2 Co-ordinate the logistics for the demonstration
1.3 Use feedback from learners and customers to inform future demonstrations

Range:
Prepare(d):  make up final craft item together with the same (or similar) craft item at different stages.
Resources:  tools, materials, handouts, finished products etc. 
Craft:   can be any form of craft e.g. papercraft, jewellery making, cake decorating, sewing, knitting, leather work, candle making, etc.
Demonstration:  showing at least 5 people how to make a craft item by talking them through the process while you do this yourself.
Logistics:  where, when, travel, accommodation, advertising, payment.
Inform:  improve you own knowledge or skills in either crafting or demonstrating..
Feedback:  a mix of written responses to questions in a questionnaire, and verbal/written comments made by others.
Learners and Customers:  students, organisers, designers, shop owners, companies.
 
All evidence must relate to the same area of crafting for this unit and for Unit 1.
 

Unit 04   Design Craft Products

Learning Outcomes:
The learner will:
4   Be able to design craft products

The learner can:
1.1 Generate idea for new craft products
1.2 Develop the new craft products
1.3 Promote the new craft products to your target audience

Range:
Generate idea:  identify sources to research new ideas, list ideas, narrow down according to a range of rules (e.g. popularity, cost, complexity etc) to decide on final idea
Craft Product:  any physical tool or material to aid in crafting e.g. templates, CDs, stamps, patterns, recipes, designs, papers, etc.NB craft can be any form of craft e.g. papercraft, jewellery making, cake decorating, sewing, knitting, leather work, candle making, etc.
Develop:  make sufficient prototypes until you are happy with finished product, then make this into actual end product for use considering packaging as well.
Promote:  use appropriate route for the product.
Target Audience:  who the product/designs are aimed at.
 
All evidence must relate to the same area of crafting for this unit and for Unit 1.
 

Unit 05   Sell Craft Products or Designs

Learning Outcomes:
The learner will:
5   Be able to sell craft products or designs

The learner can:
1.1 Identify a target audience for craft items
1.2 Identify unique selling points for craft items
1.3 Investigate routes to market for the craft items
1.4 Maintain accurate records and comply with any legal requirements
1.5 Compare profits over a sustained period against business plan objectives
1.6 Use sales information to inform future business planning

Range:
Target Audience:  who the product/designs are aimed at
Unique Selling Point:  what is going to make these products/designs stand out from others on sale; if there is no USP then what will you do to attract the audience to you rather than to other sales outlets
Identify:  list.
Investigate: list options and confirm why the chosen options are best.
Routes to Market:  how the products/design will be promoted and sold e.g. internet website, shop, craft fairs, TV shopping channel etc
Craft:   can be any form of craft e.g. papercraft, jewellery making, cake decorating, sewing, knitting, leather work, candle making, etc.
Records:  paper or computer based information.
Comply:  find out about and then make sure this happens.
Legal Requirements: relevant to selling and the craft you are selling e.g. copyright, data protection, intellectual property, liability/indemnity insurance, tax and vat, national insurance, employment law, national insurance, health and safety, environmental protection etc.
Profits:  items sold against expenditure.
Sustained Period:  minimum two years.
Objectives:  targets set around estimated sales and planned expenditure.
Inform:  improve you own knowledge or skills.

Sales can relate to your own products, or the products of others.
